Con Edison “Bill Surge” affects millions
If you are one of the 9.8 million New Yorkers that live in NYC and Westchester, you already know that Con Edison’s bills soared amazingly high with little or no public notice to customers. And the public, no surprise, is very angry, since Con Edison is one of the continental United States’ most expensive electric companies and its rates are unaffordable for many customers. Others budget carefully to afford the high rates, but note that you cannot budget for a bill that triples. On the Friday this crisis erupted, Governor Hochul and the Department of Public Service answered consumer distress, as did many elected officials.
Some of the news media coverage also noted that this latest affordability crisis came on top of record numbers of unpaid energy bills around the State due to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic collapse. PULP, AARP and a coalition or ten other groups are advocating for proactive and commonsense solutions to the crisis, so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, PULP has created some consumer-friendly graphics that we are sharing on our social media, with our partners in the NYC Council, the State Legislature and other elected officials, with the goal of helping reeling consumers figure out their next steps.
