Longer Life Projected for 315 Area Code Before New Code Is Needed

The most recent NANPA estimate of the number exhaustion date for the 315 Area Code, which covers Syracuse, Utica, and many other central and northern New York locations,has been extended from Third Quarter 2016 to Second Quarter 2017.  A year ago it had been projected that the available numbers would be so low by 2015 that a new Area Code would need to be added to serve the area, even though millions of numbers remained unused.  See our November 14, 2013 post:

The extension of the exhaustion date gives more time to work on ways to conserve number resources and avoid the inconvenience of overlaying a new area code on the existing 315, which could result in new numbers with different area codes, even in the same household or neighborhood, requiring 10-digit dialing for all calls.

It appears that number resources are declining  in the 631 Area Code, which serves parts of Long Island, and a new number exhaust date is  indicated for First Quarter 2016.
