New York’s Utility Project Seeks Executive Director
The Public Utility Law Project of New York is seeking an Executive Director. The Utility Project is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization providing information, education, research and advocacy regarding utility matters with a focus on New York’s low and fixed income residential consumers. Current goals include working toward universal service, affordable utility rates, and improved utility customer protection. The Utility Project is also a legal services organization under the New York Judiciary Law.
The Executive Director is responsible for the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission through its operational and financial objectives. We seek a dynamic leader capable of growing the organization and increasing its effectiveness through traditional advocacy and using social media.The Executive Director is responsible for compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, facilitating Board meetings, for presenting regular financial reports to the Board, and submitting an annual budget to the Board for review, revision, and approval.He or she will work to ensure the organization’s long-term fiscal health and viability. The Executive Director reports to the President of the Board of Directors and to the Board and works jointly with the Board to develop and implement the vision, goals and strategic plans for the organization.
The Executive Director has general responsibility for all operations of the organization, such as maintaining and obtaining funding, program administration, hiring and oversight of staff and consultants, program services, and program relations with current and potential funding sources and with other groups. The Executive Director should be an organized self-starter, an experienced communicator, an enthusiastic fundraiser to successfully oversee the day-to-day functions of the Utility Project and to implement plans designed to increase its growth and effectiveness. He or she must have the ability to move capably and confidently between a wide range of responsibilities including editing of written submissions to regulators, administrative and court litigation, program development, financial management, human resources, oversight of contractors, fundraising, public relations, board and volunteer relations, and staff oversight.
The Executive Director is responsible for representing the Utility Project publicly, serves as a primary media contact for the organization and provides direction on messaging to improve communication with primary and new constituencies and potential allies, participates in state and national groups having common purposes.
Candidates should be admitted to practice law in New York or knowledgeable in utility regulation and able to work with counsel in leading program activities. He or she should be familiar with administrative and legislative processes affecting utility rates, state and federal energy and telecom policies, have experience in nonprofit organization advocacy, possess excellent writing and editing skills, and have a record of advocacy for low and fixed income consumers. Compensation depends upon qualifications and experience.
